dying dream

Had a weird dream. I was waiting to die. Was aware of a few others in the same situation. We were in a graduation-from-planet-Earth kind of place. It was imminent. I was supposed to be moving on. It's my turn. So what's with this. Why am I still breathing? I get up. I want some food, man. Had not been eating in preparation for the transition, you see. I was supposed to ingest some ash-like substance to hasten the process. I get up and walk over to what appears to be a mall. I sit against a wall waiting for the end. Some stranger looks at me who seems to know what I'm going through, emanating compassion and understanding. I feel it. Then the figure rushed on to an appointed errand.

Usually I can't recall my dreams but when I woke up it was all still so vivid, as if I just stepped aside from the dream. It got me thinking. Is my end as a physical being near? My time on earth. It will definitely end, sooner or later. I thought of a friend who died recently... as I type this, one other friend as well. Physically we're not immortals but I believe there's a part of us that keeps moving on, soul, spirit, whatever you want to call it. It is what animates the flesh, blood and bones. It is the greater, the more real you and me. The body a complex, wonderful organism but temporary.

Went downstairs to pee, mentioning my dream to H. She said, better not take you to the mall next time. Yesterday I drove her to the Clackamas Town Center. While she shopped for clothes I checked out a 55-300mm Nikkor lens for the camera. Didn't get it. Gotta watch expenses closely with for now limited cash inflow. Getting sidetracked.

When I started writing this I didn't know whether to publish it on this artblog, or whether to start another, more personal blog. In the past year I've thought about starting another blog focused on trading. Although I still have a passion for trading I have not really figured out yet how to make money from it. So three separate blogs or mix them all up? Then there's also the daily photos thing at blipfoto. Don't know where to stick this in. If here then stop calling this an artblog.*
Blog, blip it... which way?

As I said earlier this dying dream got me thinking. If I croak now what did I leave? Some paintings, not much and not that good really. Made a few friends along the way and not that close. My relationship with siblings and relatives not well developed. Marriage is fine I think. Spend most of my time on the computer. So here I am with Macbook air on lap. What is my lifework? Well, I existed. The life experience all by itself is good enough. It doesn't have to be great or extraordinary. Ordinary is fine, thank you, but if I want it to be more fun, not just so-so what else would I go for? Before I board the move-on-dot-org bus? My days are numbered. I'm aware of that. What still excites me?

At breakfast H says, sorry you had a nightmare. Nothing like that at all. It was most natural and I wasn't worried, except it made me stop and think for a while. Not so much about death-- caterpillar to butterfly, that's all it is, not being tethered anymore to the physical. Life in the physical is wonderful. It's great to have feet to walk the earth with, or at least around the house in, hands to, among other things paint with, physical fingers to type these words with and so on.

The earth is teeming with human beings, all unique and very, very real. Plant life, animal life, what have you. Quite a privilege just being here, going from experience to experience, from day to day. There is something beautiful in the most mundane thing. Question is, am I waiting to die or waiting to live? What is it that truly matters?

Statement that goes with the piece in group show:

We’re all influenced by everything and by anyone we come in contact with, to some degree.
What influenced this painting?

1. Pressure: signed up to participate in show, had to make something.
2. Pattern and decoration, if it requires a label.
3. Placing the piano key on top of the little canvas: playfulness?
4. Markings with Sharpie: perhaps to satisfy a need to draw.
5. The Internet where I spend a lot of time. Surely it has an effect – good and bad.
6. Photography: have taken a picture everyday for over a year. This kind of painting can’t be experienced by taking pictures. So a desire to do something else.
7. This in turn will influence the next piece in some way.

Oil on canvas 10 x 8 inches. Mostly oil on camvas, a bit of Sharpie marks toward bottom.
On the left is the after with oil impasto totally abstract and on the right before it got painted over. Figurative, much easier to latch on to. At least I have a picture of the piece before it became abstract. I can see why abstracts have a much smaller audience.

My first painting since installing my show at Blackfish over a week ago. Oil on canvas, 10x8 inches. What I like about small paintings is they don’t take much space and can be hung just about anywhere. And they can be painted fast. For now, call this 'Sitter'.

How it looked before I painted it today. It was a quick oil sketch done at a live model session last year.

Actually did some painting today. A good thing I went down to the basement where I paint because I discovered that a gallon of sanding sealer ate through the can and was leaking for quite some time. Cleaned up the area and had two fans running for the most part of the day to air out the space.
I found an old piece consisting of horizontal stripes. This is how it looks at the moment.

What I like about it is it allows viewers to shop and get Giclée on stretched canvas prints, framed and poster/art prints as well as greeting cards made from my art images. After delivering our neighborhood newsletter H and I went by Fremont Street and by accident met Lynn Galdolfi and her husband. Lynn gave H a ceramic piece with a tulip image. Later came across Elaine Falbo with her dog.

Still continuing to make little drawings, numbering them as they were started... d001, d002 etc. Moved on to making square ones at 6x6 inches using more oil pastels. Blackfish is having a drawing show in January and images are needed by Sunday. It seems I'm able to focus when there is a show coming up and tend to not do anything when there's nothing on the horizon. It helps to have exhibits lined up.

Here are three drawings I did yesterday while a technician from India was troubleshooting my Norton Internet Security application on my desktop. He ended up uninstalling and reinstalling it.

I spend so much time in front of the computer so I thought why not bring over my little drawing pad, pastels & pens? I discovered too that pencil, if you press it hard enough, will make a mark over oil pastel. Can't do that with the ink & color pens. These are d012, d013, & d014... 6x6 inches. This small horizontal painting is what I was working on yesterday. It is either finished or still a work in progress. My natural impulse is to be sloppy and haphazard. For a change of pace, I thought, what if I just did vertical and horizontal lines and shapes, and tried to be as neat as possible?

I actually began this piece vertically. If you tilt your head to the right or left you'll see how it would be with the thick white line on the right being the top or the dark blue on the left as the top part. I was turning the thing upside down vertically every so often, adding more paint each time but could not make up my mind which was the better top. Two-thirds through the painting process I turned it sideways horizontally as you see it here and it seemed to jell, or it sat well. That's how I painted it last. Now if I turn it upside down or vertically I'm likely to make new adjustments. I'd rather start a new painting or work on unfinished business.

This is the second piece I started yesterday. Today I placed the painting in the frame intending to paint part of the frame like with the previous painting. However, it seems to work fine the way it is. I know that if I begin touching up here and there, before you know it, it would get a labored feeling, lose some of the freshness or spontaneity. Will set this aside too and instead begin a new painting. If I look at this painting in a week or so I will probably figure out what else to do with it. Statement
I make paintings because it is challenging and fun. I usually take an old piece that for some reason does not work anymore and figure out where it wants to go next. I don’t know how the thing will turn out until I get there. I stop when I do not know what else to do with it. I video the process and upload it to YouTube.

Making art, at least the kind I do, is about expressing one’s emotions.

This is the last piece I worked on for the March show at Blackfish. Left picture: before I wirebrushed and sprayed it with high gloss lacquer. Middle: after I painted it with oil paint and right, the 'back' part.

This is the only free standing piece of 12 that I'm planning to take to Blackfish tomorrow for the March show. Besides this one, 8 are oil paintings and 3 are small wall mounted, painted steel works. Some are in a photo album on Facebook.
I learned from this post that if I don't drag the images around, the links stay unbroken. A good idea to upload all the pics first before writing anything. Will try that next time.

I have been videotaping this and the previous painting, but video, especially in high def sure eats up a humongous amount of harddrive space. It is so much quicker posting this here on the blog. Dimensions 44 x 39 inches, oil on wood and canvas.

I set up the digital camera to take the smallest picture size, so I don't have to scale down the pics in Photoshop before posting.

This was an old piece that at one time was all painted white, when I was in my white period. The attached vertical piece of wood with the hole was once the leg of a chair.

My latest painting. It's 54 x 41 inches. I don't usually work this large. May add more stripes to it before I take it to Blackfish Sunday morning.

Close ups on the right and bottom right. I'm curious how this formats on the column with 1 medium and 2 small pictures.

You can actually drag the images up or down, but remain in place where you specified before uploading: on the left, middle or right. WARNING: the only problem with moving them around is you lose the link to the uploaded image.

Follow up on 'salon shaver' by H. Half the day is gone... gotta get down to the basement NOW! I had been working on a larger than usual piece. As of yesterday, I like this blog site better than my art site which feels static. Not much happens there.

Just for the record, my first show at Blackfish since I rejoined it in 2007. This was filmed by Jim Neidhardt, one of the Blackfish artists. There were two other (!!) videos from that show: one filmed primarily by H and the other of friends who showed up at the opening. The Jan '09 show is much clearer in HD.

I have yet to post a full-sized photo. Here is 'tortek' a recent painting not yet on my art site. Named after the musicians whose music I used for the video--Torley Wong and Tekatax. To watch the making of 'tortek' click here.

Png vs jpg files... The image below is a png file, not jpeg. The advantage of the latter type of file is the background can be transparent. You cannot do that with a jpeg. If the background of my blog were white, I would have used a jpeg file with a white background. Jpegs are usually much smaller files.
