how to massage a cake

Originally a vertical painting (bottom right, last painted in October 2009), turning it on its side (bottom left) for a change.
How it ended up today:

figurative to abstract

Oil on canvas 10 x 8 inches. Mostly oil on camvas, a bit of Sharpie marks toward bottom.
On the left is the after with oil impasto totally abstract and on the right before it got painted over. Figurative, much easier to latch on to. At least I have a picture of the piece before it became abstract. I can see why abstracts have a much smaller audience.

are we there yet?

After some more touch-ups this may be it for this painting, at least for today

Lower left-- after about an hour or so of painting, all covered except for face of standing figure and eyes of figure on the left... Like the texture, the oil impasto, but doesn't quite jell as the original does. May have another go at it... cover the whole thing?

dog afternoon

Repainting one of 4 small sketches from a 2009 live model session. Wanted to keep the dog, figures and Sharpie pen doodles... just to see what happens. Here's the after:

sitter

My first painting since installing my show at Blackfish over a week ago. Oil on canvas, 10x8 inches. What I like about small paintings is they don’t take much space and can be hung just about anywhere. And they can be painted fast. For now, call this 'Sitter'.

 

How it looked before I painted it today. It was a quick oil sketch done at a live model session last year.

'East & west'
Oil and mixed media. Wood divides the painting vertically in the middle with plywood triangles top and bottom. There used to be (still underneath all the paint) masking tape running horizontally across the painting.
Blogspot is not user friendly in the placement of photos.

working larger for a change

Actually did some painting today. A good thing I went down to the basement where I paint because I discovered that a gallon of sanding sealer ate through the can and was leaking for quite some time. Cleaned up the area and had two fans running for the most part of the day to air out the space.
I found an old piece consisting of horizontal stripes. This is how it looks at the moment.

work in progress #2... 9/26/09

This is the second piece I started yesterday. Today I placed the painting in the frame intending to paint part of the frame like with the previous painting. However, it seems to work fine the way it is. I know that if I begin touching up here and there, before you know it, it would get a labored feeling, lose some of the freshness or spontaneity. Will set this aside too and instead begin a new painting. If I look at this painting in a week or so I will probably figure out what else to do with it. work in progress #1 ...9/26/09

Today I'll start posting paintings in progress. Dimensions with the frame here is 13.5 by 11.5 inches. Oil on Baltic birch wood. I do not have a working title for this one at the moment. I started this painting yesterday and worked some more on it today. At this time I do not know what else to do with it. I'll set it aside and tackle another painting, same size similar frame that was initiated along with this one. Click on picture for larger image.

small framed paintings

Plan C for Climate Gallery. Made 5 small framed paintings yesterday. Oil on Baltic wood. Fitted the wood in the frames first before painting. The frames are deep enough so the wet oil paint hopefully will not smear during mailing.

el incognito... work in progress

What I'm currently working on in the basement. I must be in my horizontal stripes period. I have been videotaping this and the previous painting, but video, especially in high def sure eats up a humongous amount of harddrive space. It is so much quicker posting this here on the blog. Dimensions 44 x 39 inches, oil on wood and canvas.

I set up the digital camera to take the smallest picture size, so I don't have to scale down the pics in Photoshop before posting.

This was an old piece that at one time was all painted white, when I was in my white period. The attached vertical piece of wood with the hole was once the leg of a chair.
